Palace Road Cardiff - Roof Refurbishment

We were engaged to re-roof one of Llandaff’s largest residential properties.

The house had a traditional rosemary tile roof over 120 years old, which was starting to fail and let in water. Being located in a conservation area meant there are strict guidelines as to what you can and can’t do to your property.

Specifically, we did the following:

  • Put up scaffolding around the whole house with multiple platforms and a materials loading bay
  • Organised large skips on-site
  • Stripped the roof of all old tiles and batons
  • Disposed of all old materials
  • Put on new felt and batons
  • Put on new clay tiles
  • Put in new lead lined gulley’s
  • Repaired one chimney
  • Finished all verges in black cement
  • Fully sealed weather boards with exterior high-grade silicone.

We liaised with the local conservation team to seek advice and guidance. The decision was to replace the roof like for like.

Working with clay tiles is more complex than slate or other materials. To add to the challenge the roof is 3 stories high, has many elevations and a huge surface area. The whole house needed to be surrounded with scaffolding, with multiple platforms to gain access to the different elevations. We also had to include a loading bay to get the materials as close to the roof as possible. We estimated using over 20,000 tiles.

The result is a stunning new clay tiled roof of the highest quality.
